Frances Higgs Ellam

Frances (Higgs) Ellam, age 94 of Conshohocken, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Friday, March 5, 2021. She was born in Conshohocken on October 8, 1926. She was the daughter of the late John William and Frances (Hilgert) Higgs. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert L. Ellam. Frances was born, raised and lifelong resident of Conshohocken. She attended Barren Hill Elementary and graduated from Conshohocken High School Class of 1944. She was employed by First National Bank in Conshohocken as a bookkeeper until 1947, at which time she devoted herself to raising her children. While her children were attending the Conshohocken schools, Frances was an active in in several volunteer capacities. She was also an active member of United Methodist Church in Conshohocken. She next went on to work for Sears Roebuck as a store manager secretary in Norristown and then in North Wales, retiring in 1986. Frances was also the bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Ellam Plumbing and Heating. She was a volunteer for Colonial Neighborhood Council Meals on Wheels and Treasurer for the Borough of Conshohocken. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, baking, and cooking. Frances loved entertaining. She would serve her culinary delights, especially her Chicken Pot Pie. Above all, she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Along with her husband Robert, Frances was preceded in death by her sisters Virginia Rodebaugh and June Scott, her brothers-in-law, Harold Rodebaugh, Ralph Smith and Raymond Scott, her son-in-law, John DeVitis and daughter-in-law, Sharon Ellam. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy E. DeVitis of Conshohocken, her son, John L. Ellam of Conshohocken, her sister, Louise Smith of Conshohocken, 4 grandchildren, Robert DeVitis (Lauren), Amy Zelaya, Stacy Ellam (Diana), Johanna Herman (Jonathan), and 7 great-grandchildren, Eric Zelaya, Nicholas DeVitis, Alex Zelaya, Patrick Zelaya, Sara Zelaya, Brian DeVitis, and Francesca Ellam. Relatives and friends are invited to pay respects on Saturday morning, March 13, 2021 from 9:30 to 10:20AM in United Methodist Church, W. 6th Ave. & Fayette St., Conshohocken. A service will commence in the church at 10:30AM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Colonial Neighborhood Council at 107 E 4th Ave, Conshohocken, or the Conshohocken United Methodist Church, 20 W 6th Ave, Conshohocken at https://conshyunited.com/give/.
