Robert J. Carroll

Robert J. Carroll, age 93 of Shannondell, and formerly Plymouth Meeting and Conshohocken, a Research Chemist specializing in Electron Microscopy, passed away on Wednesday, December 8th, 2021. He was born in Conshohocken on Friday, August 24, 1928 son of the late Robert J. and Theresa (Nugent) Carroll. He was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor T. (O’Brien) Carroll for 53 years. Bob and family were raised on W. 10th Ave. in Conshohocken, where he attended St. Matthew’s Church and school, and graduated in 1946. After graduation, Bob went to work as a Lab Assistant for the Valley Forge Cement Company in West Conshohocken. Bob then attended Drexel University where he earned a Bachelors degree in Chemistry. In 1955, Bob took a position at the US Department of Agriculture’s Eastern Regional Research Center in Philadelphia. It was there that Bob learned to operate the Electron Microscope, and a storied career was launched. Bob quickly rose through the ranks at the Electron Microscopy Laboratory, conducting cutting-edge research on a wide variety of agricultural products including meat structure, collagen, leather, potatoes, human milk, and cow’s milk. Bob’s work was widely published in scientific journals. With over 60 publications to his name, he was “First Author” on seventeen papers, including having his micrographs published on the cover of Science Magazine. After retiring from the Department of Agriculture in 1987, Bob provided consulting services to the Electron Microscopy departments of several Fortune 500 companies. He then went on to serve his community in various roles, including as the Air Pollution Control Officer of Conshohocken Borough, and also was elected to and served on the School Board of The Colonial School District. Bob was an avid builder of Soap Box Derby race cars and is a Life Member of Conshohocken Fire Company #2. He is survived by: a son, Robert J. Carroll (Susan) of Centreville, VA; 3 daughters, Patty Dahm (Anthony) of West Chester, Eleanor Walton (Bruce Lutz) of West Chester, and Peggy Boehme (Ron) of Downingtown; 3 sisters, Christine Moulder, Noel Carroll and Susan Raimondo; 3 grandchildren, Georgia, Ethan and Paige; many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was predeceased by: a twin brother at birth (Charles); 3 brothers, Richard, David, and Thomas; and a sister, Mary Ann Long. Relatives and friends are invited to pay respects on Friday evening, December 10th from 5:30-7:30PM or on Saturday morning, December 11th from 8:30-10AM at the William A. Moore Funeral Home, 708 Fayette St., Conshohocken. Mass of Christian Burial will commence at 10:30AM on Saturday morning, December 11th in St. Matthew RC Church, 3rd Ave. & Fayette St., Conshohocken. Internment, St. Matthew Cemetery in Conshohocken.
